The Marine Stewardship Council has responded to debate surrounding its certification of the Ross Sea toothfish fishery.
The Chief Executive of the MSC, Rupert Howes, stated that each fishery stood or fell on the science and the evidence when it was put forward for assessment. The Ross Sea toothfish fishery had been found to meet the standards and was therefore certified, meaning the fish can be labelled as sustainably caught.
Mr Howes noted that MSC certification of the Ross Sea toothfish fishery was a separate issue from calls to turn the Ross Sea into a Marine Protected Area.
