During this year’s CCAMLR meeting, COLTO hosted a function to celebrate the collaborative work of CCAMLR, Governments, scientists, industry and NGOs in their approach to conserving the Antarctic ecosystem and fisheries over the years, which has included the significant reduction of IUU fishing for Toothfish in the Southern Ocean, the reduction to near zero levels of accidental seabird mortality in Southern Ocean fisheries, and the independent MSC certification of four separate toothfish fisheries that are deemed to be sustainable and well managed.
The event also coincided with the launch of ‘Seabird Smart Fishing‘, a short film produced by Southern Seabird Solutions in conjunction with COLTO, highlighting some of the very real achievements in reducing seabird mortality as a result of collaboration between the fishing industry, scientists and environmental NGOs.
